McKinney-Vento Homeless Education
Every student deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed. Lindale ISD is committed to helping students and families experiencing housing instability access the educational support they need.
Who Qualifies for McKinney-Vento Services?
The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act protects the educational rights of children and youth who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence.
Your child or family may qualify if you are:
-Staying temporarily with friends or relatives because you cannot afford housing or have lost your home.
-Living in a motel, hotel, campground, or shelter because you do not have another adequate place to stay.
-Living in a car, park, public space, or another place not designed for regular sleeping accommodations.
-Living in emergency or transitional housing.
A student or youth living separately from a parent or guardian who meets the eligibility requirements.
Eligibility is determined on a case-by-case basis. If you are unsure whether your family's situation qualifies, please contact Lindale ISD for assistance.
Educational Rights and Support
Eligible students have important rights under the McKinney-Vento Act, including:
Immediate School Enrollment
Students can enroll immediately, even if required records or documents, such as proof of residency, birth certificates, or immunization records, are unavailable.
School Stability and Choice
Eligible students may attend their school of origin or the school serving the area where they are currently living, subject to applicable requirements and the student's best interests.
Transportation Assistance
Eligible students may receive transportation to their school of origin when required under the law.
Access to Educational Services
Students have access to comparable educational services and programs for which they are eligible, including applicable academic support and special education services.
Help Resolving Enrollment Concerns
Families can request assistance if there is a disagreement about eligibility, school selection, or enrollment. Students must remain enrolled in the requested school while the dispute is resolved, as required by law.
